This year’s panel consisted of Dr Darren Plett (ACPFG), Joy Quigley (Thomson Playford Cutlers), Dr Clay Matthews (Bionomics) and Cadence Minge (of Adelaide). All four specialists spoke about their professional journeys and how they were able to end up at their current positions in the biotechnology industry. The diversity of the speakers demonstrated the many different aspects and options in the biotechnology field. Following the short talks, a panel debate was held on the topic ‘A PhD is a must to make it in the biotechnology’, then the opportunity for students to network with speakers. The Committee would like to extend a special thank you to each of the speakers and to our major partner, Adelaide Microscopy, and our supporting partner, The Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics. Report prepared by ABSA SA committee member Jantina Manning For more information, contact Alicia Filby, Chair ABSA SA firstname.lastname@example.org ABSA VIC This quarter ABSA Vic has been up to no good, armed with lollies, membership forms and information, the committee swarmed university lecture halls all over Melbourne this last month to advertise ABSA and promote membership. Besides this we have had our heads down and been busy organising our events for the year. Securing the Bio21 Institute as our venue for our BioCareers event, we are in the process of acquiring sponsors, and it’s looking set to be a great event. With the AusBiotech-GSK Research to Revenue event around the corner we are busy planning the final details and looking forward to a great night with last year’s winner Robert Sheppard and head researcher at GSK, Dr Ashley Bates speaking at our event. With our Bio at the Bar event in the workings and various site visits on the agenda, ABSA Vic are well on our way to achieving our goal of a successful year. Until next time, watch out for updates on the AusBiotech website and don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.
