The mammoth event will be staged near the Shanghai city centre and will cover 5.28 square kilo- metres, straddling both sides of the Huangpu River. It will highlight life in urban centres under the motto ‘Better City, Better Life’. With China already one of our largest and most important trading partners, the Victorian Government is funding a Victoria Pavilion at the expo to strengthen trade alliances and promote Victoria's innovation capabilities. Programs showcasing Victoria's strengths in science and technology, food and wine, environmental innovation, educa- tion and the arts will be developed specifically for the expo. This exposure is expected to attract international students and visi- tors to Victoria and generate millions of ongoing export revenue as well as promote strategic alliances with foreign partners. Nanotechnology and biotechnology are key focus areas for economic growth in Victoria. Melbourne is fast gaining a reputation as a centre of biotechnology excellence in the Asia Pacific region, and the Victorian Government is working to strengthen, unite and promote the sector, and to have the city acknowledged as one of the top five biotechnology locations in the world. As part of this strategy, the Victorian Government is seeking expressions of interest from biotechnology and nanotechnolo- gy companies headquartered in Victoria interested in participat- ing in the Shanghai World Expo and other highly targeted trade missions to China, including BioPartneringChina 2010.
